Eliza H. Sargent was born June 26, 1826, in Orange County, Vermont. She married Darwin Whipple on March 6, 1845 in Newport, New Hampshire. They moved with their three eldest children to Clayton County, Iowa in 1854. When her husband died on August 3, 1863, while serving with the Union Army in the Civil War, Eliza was left with six children. She married a widower, Lester Wallace, on May 21, 1868, in Clayton County. It is not clear how long she and Lester lived together. In the 1880 census he is living in Minnesota, and she is living in Elkader, Iowa with her two youngest sons. After February 1888, Edgar was the only one of her children who was still single, and Eliza lived with him in an apartment near Osborne in Clayton County, Iowa. When Edgar returned home from his work at a creamery on the evening of October 28, 1888, he found his mother Eliza collapsed on the floor, dead from a heart attack. She was buried in the East Side Cemetery (aka Elkader Cemetery) on October 31, 1888. She was 62 years of age. Although the headstone gives her death date as November 28, 1888, Whipple family records had the October 28, 1888 death date. And an article in the 1 Nov 1888 Elkader Weekly Register confirms her 31 Oct 1888 burial date. (See attached photo.)
