During WW1, Thomas Sanderson 19, enlisted in the 21st Northumberland Fusiliers (2nd Tyneside Scottish);(No. 21/1541). He was killed advancing across the Somme battlefield on the first day of battle, reportedly blown apart during the enemy shelling.

no grave to visit, much less mourn.

catching the rays of early dawn.

Some corner of a foreign field

Tom's plaque has now been erected on the Wall of Remembrance at Auchonviller's, which was a WW1 aid station just a short distance from the Somme battlefield.
