He was enrolled in Battery A, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery on Jul7 30, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private on August 12, 1861 (New Jersey Adjutant General records list his name as "Wilhelm Stopheran"). He served a full three years in the field service, and was honorably mustered out on August 18, 1864 when his enlistment expired.
