DAVENPORT - Memorial services for Ruth Currens Waterman, of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Davenport. The family invites friends for lunch in the Great Hall at the cathedral after the service. Private burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Waterman died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. She was born Jan. 7, 1915, to Dr. Frederick Hawley and Winona (Peregrine) Currens in Macomb, Ill. Mrs. Waterman graduated from the University of Illinois where she was a member of Delta Gamma. She received a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Iowa under the tutelage of Grant Wood and subsequently taught art at St. Katharine's School, Davenport. She married William Baker Waterman on Nov. 25, 1939, in Macomb. Mr. Waterman died Dec. 26, 1997. Throughout her life, Mrs. Waterman was an active volunteer for Trinity Cathedral Altar Guild, St. Luke's (now Genesis) Hospital Auxiliary, Davenport Visiting Nurse Association, Davenport Museum of Art, Quad-City Symphony and Pentwater (Mich.) Garden Club. From 1973-1976 she served as president of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of Iowa. She was instrumental in preservation and restoration of the local historic sites including the Colonel Davenport House, Antoine LeClaire House, Cody-McCausland House and Lucas-Plum Grove House in Iowa City. In addition to her volunteer work, Mrs. Waterman had a lifelong appreciation of the natural world and its mysteries which she passed along to her daughters. She was an avid gardener, a recreational bowler and a loyal Hawkeyes fan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Quad-City Symphony Orchestra and Pentwater Township Library in Pentwater, Mich. Survivors include a daughter, Bethia Waterman and a son-in-law, Earl Pardini, Big Indian, N.Y.; a daughter, Day Waterman, South Elgin, Ill.; a granddaughter, Katherine Linebaugh, Jakarta, Indonesia; and a sister, Martha King, Macomb.
