Deceased Name: EDWARD L. GRATIEN, 77 LEADER IN BOWLING LEAGUES

Edward L. Gratien, a director and former president of the Syracuse Bowling Association, died Tuesday at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 77 and lived at 116 Mary St., North Syracuse .
It was a rare day that Mr. Gratien didn't spend some time at Bowling Green in North Syracuse . An avid bowler most of his life, he visited his friends there; played Sundays for 35 years with the Norcross Mixed League, a group that he founded; and on Mondays with five men.
"He never had an enemy in the world, just a great bowler. He came every day until a week ago Monday," Paul Graham, who played regularly with him, said today.
Mr. Gratien was a member and officer of numerous leagues and participated in tournaments at the national level. He and his wife, Pauline, enjoyed many trips together to attend bowling conventions.
"Bowling was the love of his life. He loved golf, too," she said.
For years Mr. Gratien was involved with junior bowlers. "He was an officer, follower and encourager of all the young people," his wife said.
Mr. Gratien was a member of the senior golf league at the Pastime Athletic Club and usually played at Skyline and formerly at Rogue's Roost. In later years, he played weekly with Robert Nemecek and Don Hewittson.
A life resident of the Syracuse area, Mr. Gratien lived in East Syracuse before moving to North Syracuse 30 years ago. He retired as a supervisor after more than 30 years with Hall & McChesney Co.
His career with the company was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Army as a military policeman. One of his assignments was in Hawaii. Year later, he and his wife enjoyed a trip there. "It was a wonderful anniversary present," she said.
The couple kept in touch off and on through V-mail during the war. They were married Oct. 25, 1947 at Assumption Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Gratien had many bird feeders at their home. He was an expert on different bird species and enjoyed bird watching.
Surviving are his wife, the former Pauline E. Lucas; three brothers, William and Bernard, both of East Syracuse , and Norbert of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fergerson Funeral Home, North Syracuse . Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt.
