Pauline E. Gratien of Melbourne FL, formerly of Mary Street, North Syracuse, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, September 17, 2009, in her 95th year. She was born in Syracuse on March 8, 1914, one of six children of the late Hugh and Nita Steele Lucas. On October 25, 1947, she married Edward Gratien, who predeceased her on April 10, 1990. She and Edward were avid bowlers and members of the Pastime Athletic Club. After her employment with Coca Cola Bottling Co., she and Edward became extensive travelers. Her later years were spent quietly enjoying four feline residents of the home she shared with her niece and husband, Carol Behnke Deibler and Vincent Deibler, and her only surviving sibling, Dorothy Behnke, also formerly of North Syracuse. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and her sister-in-law, Margaret Lucas of Pennellville. All who met Pauline would marvel at the childhood poems she would recite, songs she would sing and stories she would relate about her upbringing in the early years of the last century. After 95 years on this earth, she is now reunited with her beloved Edward for all eternity. Services will be Wednesday, October 14, at noon with the family greeting friends prior to services, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to NAVAC, PO Box 215, North Syracuse, NY 13212 or to the North Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department, 109 Chestnut St., North Syracuse, NY 13212.
