Doris was born in San Antonio, TX, attended John Tarlton Jr. College, and in 1943 graduated from the U. of TX. Doris and Felix Vendrell married June 12, 1948; he preceded her in death.

After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from Southwestern Medical School in 1949, Doris and Felix moved to Pampa, TX, where she practiced pediatrics and raised four children. In 1965, the family returned to Dallas, TX, where Doris began a residency in pathology at Baylor University Medical Center. After completing her residency, she specialized in neuropathology and became an invaluable staff member and mentor in the Department of Pathology at Baylor until her retirement in 1992.

Following her retirement, Doris continued to pursue her love of learning as an avid reader, an active member of the SMU University Lecture Series, the Jungian Society, the Meadows Museum, and a teacher, student and vestry member at St. James Episcopal Church. She gave lovingly, devoutly, and without reservation to her family, profession, friends, church, and all endeavors to which she committed herself. She was accomplished in myriad areas apart from medicine, such as philosophy, music, cooking, quilting and needlepoint.

Doris is survived by four children and their spouses: Michael Vendrell, MD, a radiologist, (Susan Schaffhausen), Kathleen V. Rankin, DDS, (Dr. Charles Wayne Rankin), Paul Vendrell, PhD, 1954-2008, and Amelia Vendrell, MD, a hematologist and pathologist, (Jim Hull), and five grandchildren: Lukas Vendrell, Cortland Wayne Rankin, Erika Rankin, Sam Hull, and Matthew Hull, and her brother Dr. William Deal.

A Eucharist was celebrated in her memory at St. James Episcopal Church (9845 McCree Rd.) on December 17, 2005, followed by the committal of her ashes beside those of her husband in the columbarium at the church.

Memorial donations should be made to Baylor University Medical Center or St. James Episcopal Church.
