Joel "Jake" Barnard, 92, was born east of Fowler, Colo., in the home his parents, Joel Wm. and Carrie Chaney Barnard built earlier in 1921. He was born Nov. 8 and died Feb. 28 in Penrose Hospital. Services, 10 a.m. March 15, Fowler Christian Church. Jake attended No. 6 School and graduated from Fowler High School in 1939. When a new school teacher came to No. 6 School, he made sure they became acquainted. She was Jo Stewart, and this was her first teaching job. They were married in California while he attended aircraft instrument school in the Army/Air Corps. He shared World War II experiences decades later with family and friends, such as his participation in arranging a display of aircraft beneath the Eiffel Tower. In 2001, he received a plaque from the Consulate General de France, a "thank you" and Diplome to all veterans who took part in the Landing of Normandy. He served on the Fowler School Board and Oxford Ditch Board. His knowledge of all aspects of the Oxford Ditch reflected a deep commitment to irrigation and farming. He had an exceptional memory of many topics and told many fascinating stories. Survived by his wife, Jo; and daughters, Nan White and Judy Barnard; along with seven grandchildren, 16 greats and four great-greats.
