Amaziah served in the Federal Army during the War Between the States, as a Sergeant in Company A, 14th West Virginia Infantry and later also served as a Surgeon. He was taken prisoner at Greenlands Gap Maryland and confined at Libby prison. Eventually he was released from prison and after release he returned to duty with the Federal Army, only to be recaptured and confined at the infamous Andersonville Prison.
He survived his imprisonment and was released to return to his home in Doddridge County, West Virginia and life as a country doctor. His death certificate is filed with the Doddridge County Clerk, as is a copy of his will. A copy of his will is in the possession of this contributor but is much too long to reproduce here. In that will his estate was assessed on June 12th 1895 and included $3,299.87 (a considerable amount in 1895) owed to him by 322 of his patients, in amounts ranging from $98.40 by one individual to 25 cents each owed by seven different individuals. Amaziah died at 56 years, 0 months, and 6 days of age.
Some of this information is included in Hardesty's History of Doddridge County - 1883
The death record of Amaziah's son, Charles C. Ashburn, indicates that Amaziah's place of birth was Pennsylvania. The accuracy of this record is not known to me.
