HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - D. Janney Ashton, 77, of Hedgesville, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Born Dec. 9, 1922, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Wesley and Mazie Everhart Ashton.

He owned and operated Ashton's Orchards.

He was a member of Back Creek Valley Council 15; Junior Order of United American Mechanics; and Berkeley County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen R. Kipps Ashton; a daughter, Sandra Kay Price of Mooresville, N.C.; a son, John W. Ashton of Hedgesville; a sister, Mary Shultz of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a brother, Paul N. Ashton of Hedgesville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by a sister, Leola Grove; and two brothers, Woodrow Ashton and Edgar Ashton.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. The Revs. Frank Douty and Irvin Shultz will officiate. Burial will be in Central Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
