OBITUARY FOR MARY FRANCES ASHTON SHULTZ

Mary, Mom, Grandma, Aunt Mary, Ms. Mary, 93, went to her heavenly home on April 18, 2023.

Mary, the daughter of the late John Westley Ashton and Mazie Everhart Ashton was born on March 1, 1930.

Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, John Willard Shultz, and siblings: her best friend and sister, Lo (Leona Ashton Grove and husband, John), brothers Woodrow (Woody) and wife Edna, Edgar (Ed) and wife Gladys, Daniel (Janny) wife Helen, as well as her youngest sibling, Paul Ashton who is survived by wife Ruth.

Mary is survived by her children, Paul David Shultz and his wife Judy Flick Shultz, Bonnie Lorraine Shultz and partner Barry Tallent, and Wanda Gail Shultz; her Grandson John David Flick Shultz and wife Emily, their children Dylan Wayne Grose, John David Flick Shultz, Jr (Buck), Daniel Lee Shultz; her granddaughter, Jordan Eve Shultz and fiancé Tyler Hockman, Jordan's son, Ezekiel Zion Shultz (EZ, Butterbean). Mary is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Her family is very close and supports each other and the family continues to have reunions annually.

Mary spent her entire life in the service of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a faithful Christian who "walked the walk" in everything she did, and devout in believing in the promises of God. She was a member of Central Chapel Church, attending from a very young age. Although in recent years, she was no longer able to attend, she remained close with her church family, especially her Sunday school class who she faithfully taught for many years. Mary was also an active member of the Gideon Women's Auxiliary. She grew up at her family home in Shanghai, WV. One of her favorite things and childhood pastimes was playing in the spring that ran beside the house. She was a dutiful daughter who helped with the "women's work" around the farm where she learned to can from her garden and cook. Her passion was gardening – growing beautiful flowers, nurturing them and enjoying the beautiful colors. She and John also had beautiful vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and other fruit which were preserved for the many family meals.

As a young woman she worked at Perfection Garment Company and rented a room over Herald's Drug Store. She took great pride in her job and loved interacting with friends on a daily basis. When her children were in school, she would work in the evenings at Musselman Plant to earn money to buy a piano so that David and Bonnie could learn to play. She also enjoyed playing the piano and on Sunday afternoons the family would gather in the living room for her to play and sing hymns together.

Mary was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She fixed phenomenal old fashion farm food – daily cooking three meals and for every special occasion. She found great joy in spending time with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her face always lit up when they came to visit. She loved to travel the state of WV and other surrounding areas when they could. One of her favorite memories was making a trip to visit her niece JoAnn in Idaho making many stops the way. She enjoyed painting pictures and lawn ornaments. She and John loved to attend auctions where they bought items to fix and resell.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Donations can be made in her name to Central Chapel (2546 Back Creek Valley Rd, Hedgesville, WV) and Gideon International. Mary had a great love of flowers; please feel free to honor her with them, however, we ask that at the end of the service you take the flowers home, place on loved ones grave or otherwise gift them to someone who will enjoy as much as she. The family would like to thank everyone for your love and prayers over the last year. Special thanks to her caregivers, Vanessa Shifflet, Linda Dozier, Tasha Williams, Carol Sims and Addona Jones.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Central Chapel Church.

Family will receive friends Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6-8 pm at the Brown Funeral Home - South Berkeley Chapel, in Inwood.

Interment will be in Central Chapel Cemetery
