Politician,Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister.Born Anthony Neil Wedgwood Benn,he announced in 1973 that he wanted to be known as Tony Benn.Served in the Royal Air Forced during World War II.He first entered Parliament in 1950 as the Member for Bristol South East.He inherited the title of 2nd Viscount Stansgate in 1960, this precluded him sitting in the House of Commons, he worked hard at renouncing the title, The Peerage Act 1963 became law 6pm on 31 July 1963 and Benn renounced his title at 6:22pm that day. He was re-elected to the Commons August 1963.He was a Member of Parliament for 50 years,when he stood down from Parliament he famously said he was "leaving parliament in order to spend more time on politics". He became President of the Stop the War Coalition from 2001 until his death.
