Former Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Valladolid, Monsignor José Delicado Baeza was born in Almansa, Albacete, Spain, and upon finishing his studies at the Seminary of Málaga and the Pontifical University of Salamanca, was ordained to the priesthood in Almansa on July 21, 1951.

Coadjutor of the Purísima Concepción parish of Albacete, he lectured at the Instituto y Consiliario Diocesano de los Movimientos Obreros de Jóvenes y Adultos, he was named canon of the Cathedral Chapter of Albacete in 1952. Professor and spiritual director at the local seminary, he moved to Rome where he served at the Iglesia Nacional Española de Montserrat, authoring in the meantime various publications focusing mainly on pastorality and spirituality.

Named Bishop of the Diocese of Tui-Vigo, Delicado Baeza received his episcopal consecration in Almansa from Cardinal Arturo Tabera Araoz CMF., assisted by Archbishops José López Ortiz OSA., and José María García Lahiguera on September 28, 1969.

Promoted to the Metropolitan See of Valladolid on April 18, 1975, he took possession of the see on the following June 7. His episcopate, at a time of political upheaval, saw the introduction of participative pastorality and dialogue between faith and culture. He opened channels between priests and lay people and initiated pastoral programs and meetings.

Vice-President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference between 1981 and 1988, he retired from the pastoral government of his See on August 28, 2002, keeping residence in Valladolid. He passed away there at the Residencia de las Hermanitas de los Pobres, a home for elderly, on Monday, March 17, 2014, aged 87. Laid out in state at the Archiepiscopal Palace of Valencia, Requiem Mass was held on Tuesday, March 18 at 17 hrs., at the Cathedral followed by internment in the Capilla del Sagrario.
