Wayne J.E. Riherd was born May 1,1922 in Nemaha, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Edna (Fanning) Riherd. He graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1940. He left home after graduation for aircraft training in Sioux City. He started working on aircraft in Baltimore. He transferred to Omaha to work at Glen Martin where he met and married Deloris Bockelman on June 12,1943 in Omaha. Mrs. Riherd died June 22,1998.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army AirCorp and was honorably discharged in 1945. After his discharge, he started farming and was a hog buyer for Sioux Quality Pack in Hudson. In 1978, they bought a farm and moved to Sioux City. He was still living on the farm at the time of his death. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #6149 in Alcester for 58 years.
Survivors include four children, Pam Gross of Jefferson, S.D., Ron Riherd of Rapid City, Vicki Tjeerdsma of Tyndall, S.D., and Rick Riherd of Salix, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Wilber of Centralia, Wash.; a brother, Thomas Riherd of Crystal Lake, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Mae Riherd of Forest City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant sister, Barbara Jean, and a brother, Wendell Riherd.
