Anthony Geran, Sr., left Ireland for the United States and enlisted as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps. After being mustered out he settled at New York and married M. (maiden name unknown; 1810 Ireland) in 1845. He enlisted as a private during the War with Mexico and was mustered into Battery H, 3rd U.S. Artillery. He was later transferred to Battery L, 2nd U.S. Artillery. Immediately after the war he relocated his family to California in 1848. He was living at Sacramento, California, with his wife M. and his sons, J. (1846, NY) and Anthony, Jr. (1849, CA). During the Civil War, Anthony, Sr., enlisted as a private for 3 years at San Francisco September 21, 1861, and was mustered into Company I, 3rd California Infantry, October 3. Private Geran was mustered out at Camp Douglas (Salt Lake City), Utah Territory, October 4, 1864. He returned to California and re-enlisted as a private at San Francisco October 31, 1864, and was mustered into Company E, 4th California Infantry, where he served alongside his son, Anthony Geran, Jr. Private Geran, Sr., and his son were mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco, March 30, 1866 (Orton, 586, 633). Anthony, Sr., appears as a registered voter at Sonoma in 1867, San Francisco in 1875, and Los Angeles in 1890 and 1892 (Great Registers). He and his son were both members of San Francisco's George Thomas Post, No. 2, G.A.R., and he provided his address as 35 Natoma Street in 1886 (1886 G.A.R. Dept. California Great Register). Anthony, Sr., was admitted to the Veterans Home of California, Yountville, May 25, 1887. Anthony was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Sawtelle, California, from the Yountville home March 15, 1889. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Sawtelle November 28, 1890, and received application No. 964,749 and certificate No. 870,229. Anthony died at the Sawtelle Home March 29, 1895, and was buried in the adjacent Los Angeles National Cemetery.
