Old Resident Is Dead Past Eighty
Mrs. Abigail Rutledge Passes Away After Long Illness - Funeral Saturday
Mrs. Abigail Rutledge, a resident of Winnebago county the past seventy years, died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock at her home, 624 Oak street.
She had been ill of Brights disease for several years and the past year she was in serious condition, death being expected at any time.
Decedent was born at Johnstown, New York, Oct. 1, 1835, and when she was a child her parents removed to Winnebago county, settling here in 1836. Her father, Benjamin Richardson, made his home in Roscoe township and she lived in that township many years.
She was married in Chicago to Thomas Rutledge March 30, 1854, and soon afterward they removed to Canada, where they remained several years and later went to St. Louis, which was their home until after the civil war. Mrs. Rutledge came to Rockford in 1869 after the death of her husband in the west and this had been her home since, her residence being at Kishwaukee and Oak streets. Four children remain to mourn their loss. They are W.C. Rutledge of Kansas City, Miss Emma L. Rutledge of Rockford, Dr. James A. Rutledge, head physician of the M.W.A., and J.F. Rutledge of LaJunta, Colorado. Charles Richardson of Roscoe and Frank Richardson of Riverside, Calif., are brothers and Mrs. Emily Atwood of Capron and Mrs. Mary Baird of Long Beach, Calif., are sisters.
Decedent was a member of the Methodist church from her early life and was a member of Centennial church during her residence in Rockford. She took a deep interest in affairs of the church although of quiet and retired life.
Funeral services have not been arranged definately but probably the obsequies will take place Saturday afternoon from the home, the Rev. F.W. Barnum officiating and interment being in the West Side cemetery. Services will be private.
