Dancer. Noted British dancer and ballet director. He became the first male dancer to win a scholarship to Sadler's Wells School. He joined the Vic Wells Ballet in 1936 and was appointed principal two years later. His career was interupted by injury and war service. However after Robert Helpmann's retirement he took over as the company's leading dancer and partner of Margot Fonteyn. He danced leading roles in all the classics and created many in new ballets, many by Ashton including 'Sylvia', 'Birthday Offering' and 'Ondine'. After retiring in 1961 he performed mime roles with the company. He was assistant director of the Royal ballet also its principal repetiteur and teacher. He was married to the dancers Deirdre Dixon, Antoinette Sibley and Wendy Ellis. Died from a brain tumour
