CORNISH FLAT -- Hannah Bardwell Schad, 91, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at her home in Cornish Flat.
Born in Hatfield, Mass. on April 24, 1917, on a farm that has belonged to her family, since before the American Revolution, Hannah was the daughter of Arthur Curtis Bardwell and Wilma (Cory) Bardwell.
She attended school in Hatfield and Northhampton, Mass. and Wheaton College as a classical studies major, graduating in 1939.
Hannah attended business school and worked as a private secretary for the Hamilton Standard Company of Hartford, Conn.
She was accepted as a secretary for overseas duty with the American Red Cross and was stationed in Hawaii and the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands from 1944 to 1946. Returning from the war, Hannah worked as a secretary in Schenectady, N.Y. for General Electric.
Hannah married James L. Schad and began her family in Wayland, Mass.. She moved to Cornish Flat in 1975.
She was an avid reader, gardener of perennials and vegetables, and loved to cook for her family and friends. Hannah loved to do crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, crossstitching, playing bridge, and was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Hannah cultivated a large blueberry field that she offered to neighbors for picking. She also took great joy in the lives of her grandchildren.
Hannah was the treasurer and corresponding secretary for the Cornish Historical Society for over 20 years. She held a keen interest in preserving Cornish's history, especially the Cornish Meetinghouse.
Hannah researched her own genealogy, tracing her own heritage to Bardwell, England.
She was predeceased by her sister, Deborah B. Gresham; her former husband, James L. Schad, and a grandchild, William D. Storrs.
Survivors include her brother, A. Cory Bardwell of Hatfield; her four children, Susan Schad of Cornish Flat, Caroline E. Storrs , Frederick C. Schad , and Timothy B. Schad all of Cornish; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the Cornish Meetinghouse in Cornish Flat.
