He was the son of Matthew Gillett and Anne Merrill of New Hartford, Connecticut. Sometime in the very early 1800's, he sold his land in New Hartford and moved to Marcellus in Onondaga County, New York. One very definite reason for moving there was that his wife, Esther was brother to Judge Daniel Bradley, a very prominent resident and one of the first settlers in Marcellus.

Michael was married first to Esther Bradley who was the mother of his nine children. (See the link for wife, Esther, for a list of their children). After her death in about 1807, at some time before 1815,he married a Polly Crandall.
By sometime in 1808, he moves to Prattsburgh, New York with his younger children. Esther is not with him, giving further proof she probably died in Marcellus before the move. He and second wife, Polly, apparently moved to Harwinton, Ct. for a few years but return to Prattsburgh by 1825. In the 1835 New York State census, only Michael and Polly are listed as living in Prattsburgh. In the Church records for the town, Michael is listed as passing away on
December 25, 1837.

His family tree, basically is as follows:

Michael Gillett

Matthew Gillett

Joseph Gillett, Jr.

Joseph Gillett, Sr.

Jonathan Gillett

Rev. William Gillett

Jacques de Gillet who fled from France to Scotland due to St. Bartholomew Massacre in 1572.
