Linus came to Marcellus, Onondaga, New York with his parents in the early days of the 1800's. After they departed for Prattsburgh, New York, as a young child, he went with them. However, at a later date, he returned to Marcellus, probably to stay with his uncle, Hon. Dan Bradley (his mother's brother)or other Bradley relatives.
He became acquainted with Roxy Cody, daughter of Elijah Cody and Sarah Chapman. The Codys (related to Buffalo Bill Cody) were amongst the first settlers in the Marcellus area, coming from Massachusetts, and along with the Reeds and Bowens, founded the small community of Clintonville outside Marcellus. Joseph Cody started a tavern about 1806 in Clintonville to accommodate the stagecoach passengers who stopped there enroute East or West. A few years later, Joseph sold his land and tavern, primarily to his brothers. Elijah, his brother, according to a sparse record, apparently lived in Clintonville running this same tavern for a few years. It was no mystery with Linus meeting Roxy as she was almost certainly living in Clintonville then as her father was helping to run the stagecoach tavern. This was across the road from my childhood home on what is now Route 20, a major East-West highway through New York State. At this time, also, Linus was no doubt often staying with his sister, Lindey Gillett Seymour, who lived a mile down the road. Linus and Roxy were married in Marcellus on April 22, 1821 and shortly thereafter left for Canada. They probably went to join Roxy's Father, Elijah Cody who had moved there. While living in Ontario, son, Augustus, was born and also, a daughter, Phoebe Jane. I should mention that whoever transcribed the 1850 census made an error in reading it as they erroneously had Augustus and Phoebe Jane born in North Carolina. It should have been Canada
.
In 1829, they went to Ann Arbor, Michigan and in 1830 to Jackson County, Michigan where a daughter, Lucy was born. Roxy was the first white woman to reside where the town of Jackson now stands.
In 1840, they moved to Olive Township, Clinton, Michigan.
Roxy died according to records in Clinton in February 1850.

The children of Linus and Roxy were as follows:

Augustus Gillett born in Canada in 1826.

Phoebe Jane Gillett born in Zorra, Oxford,
Ontario, Canada on July 26, 1828. She
married Abram V. Pugsley on May 15, 1851
in Olive, Clinton County.

Lucy A. Gillett in Jackson County, Michigan
in 1831. She married John Merrihew.

Linus almost immediately remarried on October 8, 1850 to Hannah Pattridge of Dewitt. She was born in New York about 1826 and is prob. Hannah(Partridge) Pattridge) living in household of Adam Partridge in 1850 in Dewitt. He may have been a brother or brother-in-law to hear as it seems Hannah may have been married once before Linus.
(NOTE: 1850 census for Dewitt, Clinton was taken in September).

The children of Linus and Hannah were as follows:

Emily Gillett born August 10, 1851.
She married Edwin Dunham.

Hudson Gillett born Dec. 31,1853.

Linus A. Gillett born February 22, 1863.
