Family records indicate that in Germany the surname is spelled "Bogenschütz", however, when the family came to Cape Vincent, they added the "e" as a substitute for the umlaut. Later, many family members simply skipped the umlaut and the "e", leading to a spelling of "Bogenschutz". Many family members moved to Manitowoc County, Wisconsin and many kept the "e" in the name. Not sure what happened to the spelling on the gravestone.
