Huchel, born in Lichterfelde, now Berlin, was a German lyric and editor. His oeuvre, apart from minor theatre pieces, consists of several hundred poems, especially describing nature but also historic events like the suffering during WW II and the repressive in former GDR.
Huchel grew up in Berlin and near Potsdam. During the Third Reich, he was in distance to the régime. After being drawn to the army and being a PoW, he returned to what became the GDR. Although at the beginning in favour of the built-up of socialism, he quickly recognised the negative sides of the system. Protected by Brecht, he was the editor of "Sinn und Form", then the most prestigious East German literary review. After the death of Brecht, he suffered increasingly under chicane by the communist régime. Losing his editor function, he retired into "inner exile", being increasingly harassed and isolated by the Stasi, a situation impressively described in his poems. His last home in GDR was at Wilhelmshorst near Potsdam. In 1971, he was allowed to leave the GDR for West Germany. In 1975, he won the "Europalia" prize.
Together with Eich and Krolow, he was one of the three leading authors of German lyrics of his generation.
