LAWRENCE JENNINGS IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Death came to Lawrence Jennings, pioneer, Saturday evening July 20, 1929, ending the eighty sixth year of his life, also closing for him the sixty second year of his wedded life, and notably marking the end of the seventy-fourth year of his residence in McGregor and vicinity.
Mr. Jennings was born in Toronto, Canada on February 14, 1843. He came to Iowa by covered wagon with his father, Mathias Jennings in 1855. His father was a cooper by trade and came to Iowa in search of timbered country that would furnish a supply of stave lumber to make kegs and barrels. On October 13, 1867 he was united in marriage to Saphrona Dickens, oldest daughter of Edward G. and Ann Dickens. He farmed for many years on Pleasant Ridge until he retired and moved to McGregor.
To know him was to respect him and to appreciate that there was no more game-loving gentleman, no more hospitable gentleman , no more amiable gentleman than Lawrence Jennings, pioneer.
He leaves his wife Saphrona Jennings; his death ending a companionship of sixty-two years. To her, the heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended.
His sisters, Nancy and Euphemia preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Jennings' home with burial in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were; Mrs. W. S. Hector of Chicago: Mrs. W. F. Dickens and daughters of Tomah, Wisconsin, and Mrs. R. W. B. Otkins of LaCrosse, Wis.
