James was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England in 1817, where he married his wife, Elizabeth Mann, in 1837. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 and became a farmer on Waldo Road in Wheatfield Township, Ingham County in 1864. He is the father of Ann, Charles, George, William, John, Mary, Sarah, Adilade and Martha. He died an accidental death at a railroad crossing in Saginaw on 5/13/1903.
