Dick was a truly great man, and had been my brother, John J. Devon's supervisor at EmergyCare, Inc. when my brother first began working at ECI. John admired Mr. Campbell to an infinite degree, and I think in many ways Mr. Campbell almost came to symbolize for John not only true professionalism in the Emergency Medical Services field, but almost became a father figure of sorts in the profession for my brother. John valued Mr. Campbell's advice based from many years of serving the public and overall camaraderie. After John passed away in 1997, Dick became one of the founding members of the John J. Devon Memorial Education Fund. I know he missed my brother in the extreme; and in some small way, I'm content in the knowledge that John was there for Dick when he passed. Mr. Campbell was just a genuinely nice man, and gave my parents a lot of support when we lost John.

Dick was an original member of the West County Paramedics. He was a member of the Albion Church of the Nazarene and F&AM Lodge #304, Albion. He was a past member of the Cranesville volunteer fire department. Dick retired from EmergyCare, Inc. on May 20, 2005 at the age of 63, where he worked not only as a paramedic and a Flight medic on LifeStar, but where he was also a Supervisor for a number of years. Before entering the field of EMS, Dick was employed by the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad.

Besides his parents, Hugh and Ruth Jones Campbell, and his sister, Rebecca Sherman, he is survived by his wife, Sandy Szparaga Campbell, whom he married on July 28, 1990; three children from a previous marriage and their families, and two stepchildren and their families; numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Dick enjoyed hunting, walking his dog, and NASCAR. He was a Dale Earnhardt fan, and loved the Cubs. He also enjoyed camping, and would open his cabin up when my brother was alive and invite many of his co-workers down to camp for a weekend. After John passed, Dick was able to tell us many exploits and adventures about John and the rest of the campers that would leave us laughing and crying. For me in these stories, he was able to show me a side of my brother that I never got to see firsthand; and for that, if nothing else, I will be eternally grateful for having known Dick Campbell.

Memorials may be made to the EmergyCare LifeStar Flight Programs, 1701 Sassafras Street, Erie, PA 16502.
