Architect and urban planner. Sanmicheli designed buildings, religious structures and buildings and fortifications in the Venetian Empire, including in Venice, Verona, Bergamo, Brescia, Dalmatia, Zadar, Šibenik, Crete, and Corfu. Known for his work in the Mannerist style, he studied at an early age in Rome, and was an assistant to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. He went to Orvieto in 1509 and worked there for the next two decades as the master builder of the cathedral of Orvieto. Sanmicheli and Sangallo were asked by Pope Clement VII to examine and repair fortifications in the northern Papal States, and they also supervised new works at Parma and Piacenza. By the late 1520s, he was working in Verona and worked for the Venetian Republic as a military architect where he designed fortresses for Venice, Cyprus, and Crete. He also designed churches and palaces, including the Renaissance Palazzo Grimani and Pellegrini Chapel in Verona.
