John C. Very’s probate record includes a “bill of Henry Hubon for coffin” for $29.36. (John and Henry are both named on the tombstone marker.)
Henry Hubon (1790-1864) came to Salem, MA as a young man from the Dominican Republic and was most likely of French descent. He was naturalized as a US citizen in 1811 and fought in the War of 1812. It appears that both Henry and his son, Henry Grant Hubon, were undertakers.
He first married Ann Beckford on 5 January 1812. It appears she died in child birth or shortly after but their only child, Eliza Ann Hubon (1813-1901) survived and married Richard Burnham about 1830. They lived in Winchester, MA.
Henry next married Frances Dwyer (c.1792-c.1862) on 13 December 1818. They had at least four children:
Frances E. Hubon (c.1820-1850) died in Salem
Henry Grant Hubon (1822-1912) m. Lydia A. Clark of Rutland, VT and lived entire life in Salem.
Frederick Hubon (c.1827- ?) m. Caroline M. Smith and then Sarah A Allen (1829-?) and moved to California.
Charles E. Hubon (c.1828-1830)
At over 70 years old, Henry married Jane Andrew Dawson (c.1815-1902) on 1 May 1863 but appears to have died shortly afterwards as his name does not appear in the 1865 Massachusetts Census with her.
His death record reports death on 25 Sep 1864 at age 74y 4m 25d, in Salem, Massachusetts, of "cancer of the stomach". He is described as a "Cabinet maker". He was born in "Dominica", and his parents, Henry and Maria Hubon, were reportedly from Baltimore.
