In the early 50s he made it to Broadway, appearing in “Ondine.” This in turn led to films and TV where he solidified his evil image in such films as “The Desperate Hours” (1955) as a sadistic killer, “The Court Jester” (1956) as a grim and gristly knight who jousts with Danny Kaye in the famous 'pellet with the poison' sequence. Robert also showed his humorous and dramatic side in the film “Friendly Persuasion” with Gary Cooper. His last film before his death was “The Lincoln Conspiracy” (1977) as Edwin M Stanton. Middleton died in 1977, of congestive heart failure in Hollywood at the age of 66.
