JAMES GROVES JR. was born 25 Apr 1810 in Louisiana, son of James Groves Sr. and Mary Nash, and he died 25 Dec 1885 in Vernon Parish, Louisiana.
He married Nancy Perkins, and nine children were born. Nancy was born 7 Oct 1820 LA and died 6 Aug 1902 (Vernon) LA. They are buried in Glass Window Cemetery, Slagle, Vernon Parish, Louisiana.
James Groves served in the Confederate Army as a Private in Co. K, 6th Louisiana Cavalry. He operated a stage station in Vernon Parish, and owned one of the largest properties in the parish (inherited from his father). He was a member of the Vernon Parish School Board for many years, on the Police Jury, and was a Justice of the Peace. He was a Charter member of the Walnut Hill Baptist Church when it was organized in 1867, served as its first Clerk and held that position until June 1876. On 19 Jun 1880, he was elected treasurer of the church. He also served as Deacon in the church, delegate to the Associational meetings. He was a charter member of the N.H. Bray Masonic Lodge in Slagle, LA.

Their children are as follows:
James Penderson Groves, 1839-1864 (killed during Civil War)
Mary Groves, 1840-1902 (married L.C. Sweat II)
Elizabeth Groves, 1842-1811
Lucinda Groves, 1844-1895
Sarah Massina Groves, 1846-1905
William P. Groves, 1848-1854
Linson P. Groves, 1850-1920
Henry Pink Groves, 1853-1876
Emma C. Groves, 1858-1876

Information furnished by Cheryl Tilley Perkins, direct descendant of James Jr. and Nancy Perkins Groves through their daughter Mary.

(I removed a statement about William P. Groves being born in 1856 and not dying until 1948 because it is wrong. Little William P. the son of James Jr. and Nancy died in 1854 at the age of 6 years old and is buried at Glass Window Cemetery. The 1870 Census does show a William Groves but he is not the son of James Jr. and Nancy. The Census taker messed up on Elizabeth Groves Bass' name and those of her 2 daughters Nancy and Susieanna so it's possible he messed up William's last name too! The William Pierce Groves the person cited as dying in 1948 in Texas is the son of Edmund Groves. I don't know if Edmund is related to James or not.) Cheryl Perkins
