Floyd George Buffington, "George" to family and friends, was born on May 26, 1918 in Ellington MO to Frank Pepper Buffington and Elsie Maude (Knuckles) Buffington. Dad lived in Missouri until 1928, at which time his family moved to Tucon AZ. They lived there for a year while his Mother attended her ailing sister. Dad and his family then moved to Colorado in 1929, and he attended seventh and eight grades at the Oak Grove School in the North Pines.
Dad started working soon after finishing the eight grade in order to help support his family, which eventually grew to include 10 children, He worked both as a farmer and a sawmill hand. In 1938 Dad began working as a uranium miner and did so until he was drafted into the United States Army on November 3, 1941, to fight in World War II. He served at the rank of Sargent for nearly all of his enlistment. Dad fought in the Atlantic-Pacific Theater including battles in the Aleutian Islands, Marshal Islands, Philippine Islands and Ryukyus. He was honorably discharged on October 8,1945.
Dad returned home to Colorado where he resumed his work as a miner with several different mines. On December 24, 1954 Dad married Mom, Lillian Janet May. They made their home in Slick Rock CO, where they had their four children; Greg, Brenda, Lana, and Matt. They then moved to Dove Creek in 1966. In 1957 Dad started working with Union Carbide, and remained with them until he retired in 1966.
Dad passed away at the age of 76 on December 29, 1994. The world has lost an intelligent, self-educated man. He was a father-figure to his brothers and sisters as well as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and cousin. Dad was a no-frill, no-nonsense man, and he was a simple man in a complicated way. Dad was our hero.
Proceeding him in death were his mother, father, and sister Dorothy Johnson.
Those left to mourn his passing are his wife Janet, of 40 years; four children. Greg of Dolores CO, Brenda and husband Gary Martinez of Dove Creek CO, Lana and husband Tom Hancock of Dove Creek CO, and Matt and wife Sonie of Durango CO. Six grandchildren, six sisters and two brothers as well as many nieces, nephews, cousing and friends.
Grave side services were conducted by Matt Buffington at the Peel Cemetery on December 31, 1994. VFW Post #5181 conducted military services prior to interment.
