Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Shirley Arleene Diederich will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Peel Cemetery. Reverend Bud Rousset will officiate.
Shirley was born February 6, 1938 in Egnar, Colo. the 10th child of Frank Pepper and Elsie Maude (Knuckles) Buffington. She passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at her residence at the age of 78.
Bob and Shirley were married in Cortez on November 8, 1961.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; her sons, Rick and Ed McCullough; her step-son, Mike Sowers; and her step-daughter, Sheryl Sowers. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Skyler, Amanda, Sarah, Elizabeth, Adam, Mary, Peter, Anna, Ben, and Lydia, and by 11 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was an active artist and a member of the SW Artist League and is known for her painting ability. The SW Artist League will be honorary pallbearers. She is also known as a superior cook and has shared many recipes with local people. Shirley is widely known as a kind and gentle person. She will be missed.
