Hans was the 6th of 7 children who reached adulthood, born to Hans Peter and Nickoline (Hansen) Rasmussen in Atlantic, Iowa. Besides the first two siblings who died in infancy, Hans's siblings were Carl, Agnes, Noble, Anna, Ted and Ernest.

Hans's father was a contractor and died as a result of an accident in 1912, shortly before Hans's 5th birthday. Hans and his 8 years old brother Ted were sent to live with the George Thygesen family near Kimballton, Audubon County, Iowa that first summer. Hans did not go back, but Ted did. All the children then had to work to make ends meet for the family.

Hans helped with the family garden, fruit trees, and grape vines. He also helped his mother raise and train Airedale dogs to sell. When Hans was old enough, he helped at the Porter and Didger Grocery Store. Hans and Ted hand-dug one-acre garden plots. Later, Hans worked at Hammand Daisy and Mullans Tire and Battery. Eventually, Hans operated his own business in the Soren Aagaard building on Walnut Street in Atlantic, where he sold Chryslers, tires and batteries.

Hans married Gladys Cornell in 1935. Their children:

Hans was very good to look after his mother.

Hans died at age 70 from massive cerebral thrombosis on 16 Feb 1976. He was buried Feb 18 in Section 4, Lot 804A-02 in the Atlantic Cemetery.
