Fourteen years had passed since the Great Sioux War in which Lt. Colonel George A. Custer's 7th Cavalry had been mauled by the Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Nations. In the following years the Indians had been beaten down by the armed might of the U.S. Army and relegated to reservations. By 1890 there was much unrest within the system and a religion of sorts stirred the native populace called the Ghost Dance. It was a pseudo Christian way of belief of a resurrection of former warriors reclaiming their birthrights. Very paranoid government Indian officials saw the gesture as a threat and sought to squelch it. At a gathering near the Wounded Knee Reservation of Lakota Sioux and the 7th Cavalry – tempers flared as the army attempted to disarm the warriors. What ensued was a shooting spree at which 150 men, women and children were killed. (Over thirty soldiers were also killed – most from so called "friendly fire"). It was the last so called battle of the long interim of European-Indian Wars that had begun in 1493 – one year after Columbus had reached the New World.
Pictured is the hill where the U.S. Army had unlimbered some deadly Hotchkiss Guns during the incident – and where the mass grave of the victims was eventually dug.

The mass grave as it appears today – fenced in and with Lakota prayer scarves left by ancestors. Relatives of the victims built the little church in 1903 along with some of the memorials.
