Nancy Ann Donoho Slate was the daughter of William. D. "Billy" Donoho and Mary "Jennie" Jenkins Donaho. The Donoho family was among the early residents of Smith County, Tennessee, having come from North Carolina before 1800.

On 25 Apr 1841, Nancy married John William Slate.

John died in 1871, leaving Nancy a widow. During the remaining 43 years of her life, she never remarried. Nancy Slate was an active member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

Nancy and John are buried together here on their land, in the Slate family cemetery.
