In 1900 he and his parents and five siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, in Fairplay Township, Greene County, IN. His father worked as a laborer for a railroad.

In 1910 he, his parents, five siblings--but not the same five as in 1900--and his sister Mary's son Floyd lived in a house they were renting at 1527 McClain Street (now South Richland Street) in Indianapolis, IN. His father worked as a section man for a railroad, Mary as a wrapper for a candy company, and Lilly as a cream dipper for a candy company.

In 1920 he, his parents, four siblings, and his sister Dollie's daughter Marcia lived in a house they were renting at 1756 Blaine Avenue in Indianapolis. His father worked as a section laborer for a steam railway, Lilly as a forelady at a candy company, Dollie as a wrapper at a candy company, he as a teamster for an auto company, and Roy as a cleaner at a stockyards. He married Anna Hester Eggers 18 Feb 1924 in Marion County, IN.

In 1930 he and his wife and their four children lived in a house they were renting for ten dollars a month at 1531 Shepard Street in Indianapolis. They did not have a radio. He worked as a laborer for the city.

In 1940 he and Anna and their ten children lived in a house they were renting for $11 a month at 1546 West Lee Street in Indianapolis. He worked as a laborer.
