She was a farmer's wife, who struggled with the hardships of pioneer life while raising a large family. Later on, she and her husband had a fine house with a parlor and a beautiful upstairs bannister and other comforts for the aging couple.
Originally buried on their farm, in the orchard, with husband and dau. Ellen. A dozen or so years later, her son Thomas Bates purchased the land and founded the Bates Cemetery and he had his parents and baby sister re-interred here.
