Chester was killed by lightning while plowing his field on June 16, 1920. Minutes earlier he had looked up at the sky and saw a storm coming, so he sent his 6-year old son, Joe, inside telling him he didn't want him to get his feathers ruffled.
The lightning burnt a hole in Chester's straw hat not only killing him, but his horses. His wife went outside minutes later and saw chester slumped over in the seat of the plow.
His wife would live to the age of 99. She was a widow for 69 years, never re-marrying
