Flight Lieutenant
Intelligence Branch
Royal Air Force

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Flt Lt Chauhan was one of five British service personnel killed in the crash of a Lynx MK9A helicopter in the Takhta Pul district of Kandahar, southern Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation and early reports indicate it was an accident due to catastrophic mechanical failure.

Aged 29, he was educated at King Edward's School in the West Midlands, attended St Andrew's University, and lived in Cropston, Leicestershire. In February 2008 he commenced officer training at RAF Cranwell. Upon commissioning into the RAF's Intelligence Branch he underwent further training at the Defence Intelligence and Security Centre at Chicksands in Bedfordshire, serving at RAF Waddington and RAF Marham, and in Afghanistan on two previous tours. He was lauded by a commander as an outstanding officer and rising star in the RAF. "Bright, articulate, charismatic and loyal, he was a pleasure to be around. Certainly the best Intelligence Branch officer I have known, his presentations were considered essential viewing by aircrew and others alike. Rak was a team player in every respect and worked passionately for those around him. He commanded a small team of dedicated intelligence personnel with skill, humility and professionalism; they will miss him."

Flt Lt Chauhan leaves behind his father Kishor, mother Jyoti and older brother Kesh, along with other family and friends. His father said, "Rakesh was "extremely patriotic and proud to be serving and fighting for his country. He was so committed. He threw himself into challenges, not leaving anything to chance. He has been passionate about joining the RAF since he was 11. He loved it, and I took comfort from seeing him happy in what he was doing. He was very patriotic about Britain, for which he made the ultimate sacrifice".

Funeral with full military honours was held on May 22, 2014 at Loughborough Crematorium, after a flypast and procession along Belgrave Road in Leicester.
