Writer. Prolific scriptwriter of many classic British TV sitcoms spanning a career of more than 40 years. He was born in Canning Town, London, England and began contributing scripts to comedy shows starting in 1955, including; "Great Scott It's Maynard!" (1955), Sykes And A... (1960), "The Graham Stark Show" (1964), "In Sickness And In Health" (1965), being his most famous creation, creating the controversial bigot Alf Garnett, starring Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett, the right wing working class figure with a chip on his shoulder and an angry word on everything. Garnett became one of the most memerable characters in British TV history. In 1971 US sitcom "All In The Family" was based on this character. Many more shows followed including; "For Richer...For Poorer" (1975), "In Sickness And In Health" (1985), "Carrott Confidential" (1987), "An Audience With Alf Garnett" (1997) and "The Thoughts Of Chairman Alf" (1998). Johnny Speight died of cancer in 1998.
