Joseph and his wife, Sarah (Weldrick) Smith came to Canada shortly after their marriage in 1833. They had eleven children together. In 1853, Sarah along with their three young sons, Martin, George and Daniel, died within a few months of each other. Sarah and the three children are buried in unmarked graves on the 'Smith Homestead' at Mount Elgin
