Cornelius Demarest, one of the first Excise Commissioners of Rockland county and an Aqueduct Commissioner under Mayor Gilroy, died yesterday at his home in Valhalla, N. Y., of pneumonia. Mr. Demarest was born in 1836 in Nanuet, Rockland county. He was a tax collector for four years and in 1883 was appointed an Aqueduct Commissioner. In the following year he moved to Valhalla and engaged in the livery business. He was a Mason for fifty years and was one of the oldest Masons in the county. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning from the residence and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack.
