Eliza Dustin Passes Here At Age of 88
Mrs. Eliza Dustin, member of a pioneer San Joaquin County family, passed away in a local hospital yesterday following a short illness. A native of Iowa, she was 88 years old. Mrs. Dustin was the widow of the late Charles R. Dustin who preceded her in death in 1927.
She was the mother of Orrie Dustin, Mrs. Mable Allison of Acampo, and of the late Elmer and Rena Dustin, who passed away a number of years ago. Mrs. Dustin was the sister of Mrs. Mary Murray of Galt.
It was as a girl of 2 years of age that Mrs. Dustin had come to California, across the plains with her parents, John and Sarah Ann (Allen) Driscol. Her father farmed 600 acres on Cherokee Lane until he died at the age of 71. Mrs. Dustin was educated near the family home.
In 1880, Mrs. Dustin as Miss Eliza Driscoll, was married on the old home Dustin ranch to Charles R. Dustin, uniting two pioneer families, the Dustins having come to California in 1851, and Mr. Dustin having been born that year in Utah as the family was making the long journey.
The Dustin home ranch, on which Mrs. Dustin had spent the greater part of her life, was not settled until 1867, Mrs. Dustin's father-in-law (then to-be) having returned to Utah to establish an immigrant supply station, returning to California in 1859 and locating in Stockton, and later purchasing from the government 160 acres in the Colony section. The land had to be re-purchased from the railroad owing to the cloud on the title, after which it was cleared, and under Mrs. Dustin's husband's administration had 40 acres planted to vineyard.
