John Foudray's Last Will and Testament was written in on the 13th of September 1799. It was probated in September and 22 October 1800 in Delaware. His executors were Elkanah Bray and Thomas Bell, both sons-in-law. Delaware, Wills and Probate Records, 1676-1971 New Castle Wills, vol O-P, 1794-1804 He did NOT died in North Carolina or in 1785!

He was a Ships Captain and Wharf Owner, "on the corner of French and Water Streets in Wilmington Delaware", he sold part of it to Samuel Bush and son, from Wilmington Familiar Village Tales Ancient and New by Elizabeth Montgomery. Part of the Wharf was repossessed by the man who loaned him the money to purchase a portion of this land. Part of the land was left to and lived on by his daughter Elizabeth Foudray Bentley, who was widowed with no children.

His ships names were Sloop Polly, The Elizabeth Bentley and the Sloop Liberty all about 1788 to 1800 that I found in really old newspaper clippings. He ran a "packet" from Wilmington to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He then became a Hatter according to the census, along with his sons until his death.

He married Mary Derrick born 1745 Shenandoah VA
on 5 Feb 1766 at the Holy Trinity Old Swedes Church in Wilmington Delaware.

He was not baptized in this church as I had found other family members I thought maybe related, but not John.

I can find NO connection between him and Samuel and Ann VanDe Vere Fowdry as listed in the Old Swedes Church.

I am still investigating his burial place. Since he was a ships captain for many years, I wouldn't doubt that he was buried at sea. © RoxAnna L Foudray 2014

Gravesite Details

Since he was a ships Captain for most of his life, I would not doubt he was buried at sea.
