Son of John Crossley.

His particular skills lay in dyeing, and he was effectively managing director of the family's mill.

He married Catherine, daughter of Titus Salt.

His attention to the family business enabled his brothers – John and Frank – to devote much of their time to charity and good works.

He founded the Arden Road Almshouses. He died following a fall from a carriage while on holiday in the Lake District.

He is buried in the Halifax General Cemetery. [Lister Lane ]
