With heartfelt sadness, we say a temporary farewell to Kornelius Goerzen, who passed away on January 27, 2010. Kornelius was born on February 28, 1931 in the village of Furstenwunder, Russia. His migratory journeys began early in life when his family fled from Russia to West Germany, and eventually to the Chaco region of Paraguay where they settled onto a Mennonite colony. As he matured, Kornelius developed a love for the Paraguayan work ethic and determination proved to be beneficial when Kornelius and his first wife, Anna Harms, along with their three children, Artur, Herbert and Reinhard immigrated to Canada in 1971. After several years in Canada, Gerhard and Elisabeth also joined the Goerzen family. Kornelius will be fondly remembered for his spontaneous hospitality, his love for horseshoes, walking, swimming and especially his family. He will also be remembered for his faith in God, in spite of hardship. He is predeceased by parents Jacob & Elisabeth Goerzen, his first wife, Anna, his daughter Elisabeth, and his brothers Nikolai and Heinz. He is survived by his younger brother, Jasch Goerzen, second wife Martha Goerzen, children Artur (Vera), Herbert, Reinhard (Kristi), Gerhard (Sarah) and his five grandchildren: Julie-Anna, Laryssa, Silas, Samuel and Elijah. We are truly grateful for the compassionate support and care provided by Mareke Wiebe in Dad's final months. Thanks also to Dr. Brown and the nursing staff at ARH.
