Pine Bluff High School in 1969. He earned BA in music from Arkansas State University in 1973, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Captain Phil has had a popular solo act for many years, also performing with his versatile five-piece band Hottennazz (jazz, blues, rock, country, etc.: see link) where appropriate. He has album credits as a studio engineer, writer, editor, and record producer, as well as vocalist/instrumentalist. (He played soprano, alto, and tenor sax, as well as guitar, keyboard, harmonica, etc.) Captain Phil has appeared as far away as Hong Kong and China with acts such as Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Luther Vandross, The Commodores, Jason D. Williams, B.B. King, etc. Recently he has appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel national television show, and has been collaborating with the world music band Free World on Sundays on Beale Street. At the time of his death, he had moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to help with the care of his mother, commuting to Memphis to perform. He is survived by his mother, one brother in Washington, D.C., one son and one grandson in Memphis, and many loyal fans and colleagues.
