Ames was the youngest of 13 children born to Leonard and Minerva Ames. In
1837 Ames moved to Oswego, New York and worked as a manufacturer of plaster and cement and also operated a mill where these were made. He later became head of the Ames, Howlett & Co., which he left in 1855 and established the "Ames iron works of Oswego." In 1870 Ames took his brother into the business where they manufactured portable engines which were shipped throughout the country. Ames moved to Northern California 1871 where he purchased 1,600 acres in Shasta County and raised cattle for his slaughter house. He owned a number of slaughter houses and was the first to have a slaughter house in Salt Lake City, Utah. I 1882 Ames moved to Soutnerh California and bought 200 acres near the San Gabriel Mission, later settling in Los Angeles at 4517 Central Avenue. Ames was instrumental in the subdivision and layout of the city of Vernon. In addition Ames, bought several tracts of land which he later sold for housing and in the early 1900's he was involved in refining oil for the Pacific Oil Refinery and the Santa Fe Railroad.
