James Monroe Logan was born in Holly Springs, Marshall Co., Mississippi Territory on June 2, 1836, the son of Tarlton L. Logan 1803-1877 and Jane Campbell 1800-1877. He married Mary Elizabeth Liles 1843-1912, (Dau. of Green Liles 1820-1847 and Nancy Collins 1820-1888,) on September 8, 1859 in Greene County Missouri. They had 10 children.

James Monroe was a Civil War Veteran 1861-1865. He, along with his father and 5 of his 6 brothers enrolled as a PVT at Rolla, Missouri in service of the U.S. He was sworn in under Captain Abernathy at Little York, Springfield with the Missouri Home Guards. He fought at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Springfield MO, on August 10, 1861. He later served under Captain C.B. Holland's Company of Home Guards and Captain Phelp's Missouri Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Pea Ridge, March 7-8, 1862, having been shot in the hip with buckshot. This left him with a permanent limp. He was mustered out in 1865.

In 1903 he bought a farm NW of Greensburg, Kansas in Kiowa County which remained in the family for generations. He was a Farmer and a Stone Mason.
