Born at Harcourt Street, Dublin, Robert James Graves was the eighth child (and 5th son) of The Very Reverend Richard Graves, DD, Dean of Ardagh, and Elizabeth Maria {Drought} Graves
His first wife (and cousin) was Matilda Jane Eustace, who died in child birth. He then married Sarah Jane Brinkley, but she also died, after giving birth to a daughter. In 1830, he married Anna Grogan, with whom he had six children
Doctor Graves died at his home at Merrion Square, Dublin. The year before he died he had bought Cloghan Castle, County Offaly, where members of his family continued to reside until 1908

He requested that his only epitaph
should be, that he was the son of the
late Rev'd Dr. Rich. GRAVES,
Professor of Divinity in the University
of Dublin, and that after a painful and
protracted illness he died in the love
of God, and in the faith of Jesus Christ
