William Whitaker, fifth child of John Whitader, Sr. and Martha Gough Whitaker, was born 1736 in colonial Virginia. He was about seven years old when his family migrated to Halifax County, North Carolina and settled on land that became known as the Whitaker Plantation. His father died when he was about thirteen. He and his younger siblings were raised by his mother and older brothers. He married Elizabeth Wiggins and they had four sons, all born in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was about fifty-three years old when he died in South Carolina. He and his family may have been living there at the time.
